It takes place before the Civil War and chronicles the life of free Black people living in the North, rather than focusing on slavery in the South. It was the second novel to ever be published by an African American author. The Garies and Their Friends was published in 1857. Webb was an African American novelist, poet, and essayist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. That’s why I picked up The Garies and Their Friends by Frank J. I’ve missed reading fiction, so I wanted to take advantage of my free time this summer to read books that I want to read, rather than what my professors assign to me. I spend so much time reading pages upon pages of political theory that I almost never read for pleasure. But as a political science major, most of what I read for my classes is very dense. It’s not like I don’t read already in fact, pretty much all of my homework for class at college is to read. ![]()

Toward the end of his life, Eiseley took up the autobiographical task of assessing his own life, and again there is a remarkable chapter, "Obituary of a Bone Hunter," astonishing in its frank and yet lyrical judgment of his stance toward his calling and what some might view as his failure to do what it takes to succeed. If you haven't yet discovered the beauty of his prose, begin with volume one, which opens with his first book, The Immense Journey, a book which includes the remarkable chapter "How Flowers Changed the World." This chapter can be the best introduction to his work: it includes the scientific wisdom of a thoughtful observer and the personal reflections of a scientist always alive to the world. For those of us who fell in love with Loren Eiseley's writings long ago, the issuance of this collection by the Library of America represents a gratifying recognition of his mastery of both language and solid science. ![]() ![]() ![]() Research Overview Funding Research Scientific and Clinical Initiatives Precision Promise SM Resources for Researchers Research Grants Program Resources for Healthcare Professionals Careers and Conferences Professional Networking Be a Part of Research. ![]() Give a patient, a caregiver, a researcher, the power of hope with one simple act. He "volunteers" for a second year to guarantee a billet in Thailand rather than return home because he doesn't think he can explain his 370 days in The Nam. He rails against the army, as did most draftees, who became the "expendables" while the "lifers" stayed in their air-conditioned bunkers behind the lines and collected medals for themselves. In Friendship, science journalist Lydia Denworth takes us in search of friendship’s biological, psychological, and evolutionary foundations. But what makes these bonds not just pleasant but essential, and how do they affect our bodies and our minds? Friends, after all, are the family we choose. The phenomenon of friendship is universal and elemental. ![]() A revelatory investigation of friendship, with profound implications for our understanding of what humans and animals alike need to thrive across a lifetime. ![]() |
